Australia’s Barry McErlean to lead International Coaching Diploma Course at 2020 Northeast Futsal Festival

Boston, MA — As part of its dedication to growing futsal through interactive education, the  2020 Northeast Futsal Festival will feature Australia’s Barry McErlean leading the Northeast Futsal Association’s International Special Topics Coaching Diploma course.

McErlean is the president of Arana United Futsal Club, a leader in youth player development, centrally located in Brisbane, Australia. He has led Queensland State teams to four FFA National Championships since 2010. McErlean has also managed National F-League Men’s and Women’s teams and is the editor of Futsal Hub Australia.

“This is one of those rare occasions where people from opposite sides of the world can be brought together through sport. There is a mutual passion through the sport of futsal and I look forward to sharing my passion with everyone involved at the Northeast Futsal Festival,” said McErlean.

McErlean has proven himself to be a tireless teacher and learner, having earned the Asian Football Confederation Level I Futsal Coaching License, the Football Queensland Level I & II Futsal Coaching License, and the Football Federation Australia Level III Futsal Referee License.

In 2017, he completed an in-person coaching mentorship program with Fuchu Athletic of Japan’s Professional F-League, whose head coach is the highly-regarded Shunsuke Tanimoto.

“In speaking with Barry, I could immediately tell that he is going to bring a wealth of practical knowledge and experience to our community of coaches and educators. We are very excited to have him with us in Boston for this experience,” said Zach Rocha, President of Northeast Futsal Association.

The Northeast Futsal Association’s International Special Topics Coaching Diploma course will take place at St. John’s Prep in Danvers, MA.

The course will take place in the evening from 5:30 to 8:30 pm on both Wednesday and Thursday, February 19 and 20.

In addition to leading the course, youth players will also have the opportunity to learn with McErlean, who will lead the February Vacation Futsal Camp, taking place from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm from Monday to Thursday, February 17 to 20, in the Greater Boston Area. Registration is open at

“We are thrilled to have Barry crossing the globe and supporting our event,” said James Hamblin, National Tournament Director of Global Premier Soccer.

The International Special Topics Coaching Diploma is an advanced course targeted to expert coaches or referees seeking further technical and tactical knowledge. Course participants will learn how to best implement systems of play and lead a club through a successful season of development.

McErlean continues an annual legacy of world futsal leaders hosting the Northeast Futsal Association’s International Special Topics Coaching Diploma Course. In 2018, FC Barcelona Futsal Technical Director Jordi Torras taught the course and in 2019, the course was taught by Brazilian legend Zego.
